The Kent County Council elections on 1st May 2025 saw Canterbury and Coastal Lib Dems run a strong campaign, winning both our target seats of Canterbury South and Canterbury North. This was only possible with the energy, time and determination of our members including many who joined our action days and those who ensured campaign leaflets were delivered across the district.  These efforts were rewarded with the election of our two KCC councillors, Mike Sole and Alex Ricketts. Across Kent the number of Lib Dem KCC councillors doubled from 6 to 12.

This result builds on success in the local elections of 4th May 2023, where we successfully removed the Conservatives from power on Canterbury City Council. For three years working in coalition we continued to make huge progress on our manifesto pledges to deliver real results for residents.  The coalition came to an end in May 2026, with the Liberal Democrats having achieved much, not least to leave the council in a strong financial position and working to ensure key amendments to the Local Plan. Other achievements include expanding park and ride, returning the three-hour free parking for blue badge holders, introducing the residents’ parking rate, and protecting funding for parish councils.

Nationally, the Liberal Democrats are back as a major force in British politics.  Following the general election on 4th July 2024 we now have 72 MPs in parliament and are once again the third party in Westminster.  Many of our local members gave their energy and time to support campaigns in the target seats of Eastbourne and Tunbridge Wells, both of which successfully elected Liberal Democrat MPs, with Mike Martin becoming our first Liberal Democrat MP In Kent.
