The structure of the future Unitary authorities in Kent has now been confirmed by central government. There will be four Unitary Authorities: East Kent,  Mid Kent, West Kent and North Kent.

Canterbury will be part of the new East Kent Unitary, along with Thanet and Dover.

In May 2027, there will be elections for a new ‘shadow’ East Kent Unitary which will then spend its first year in setting up the new authority.

Then from May 2028, KCC and the existing district authorities will be dissolved and the new East Kent Unitary Authority will take over.

This means that Lib Dem local parties will now be preparing to contest seats in the shadow elections in May 2027.  The elections will be based on the existing County divisions, but with 3 seats in each division.

More information about the Local Government Reorganisation and upcoming elections will be shared as it becomes available.
